Off-Broadstreet's new play full of miner shenanigans - The Union

John Driscoll has done it again by writing a new musical comedy that should have his fans flocking to Off Broadstreet to enjoy.

The world premiere of "The Great Northwest Mining & Doo-Wop Co." starts its nine-week run Friday at Driscoll's intimate cabaret dessert theater in Nevada City.

The comedy is a mixture of fact and fiction. Fact, because it is based on research done at a real operating mine, the 16-to-1 Mine in the nearby town of Alleghany. Indeed, some of the clothes and props are on loan from the mine. Even the dialogue contains information gathered in informal interviews with local gold miners. All of this, of course, adds to the authenticity of the production.

And fiction because the story line sprang from Driscoll's fertile imagination. It is about four hard-rock gold miners who are charged with the task of finding investors to support their struggling mining operation. Converting an abandoned 19th century foundry into a cabaret called The Doo Wop Inn, they devise entertainment to pique the interest of vacationing summer campers while acquainting them with the joys, challenges and life lessons of hard-rock gold mining, as well as the thrill of doo-wop singing.

With plenty of laughs and familiar hit tunes from the 1950s, the comedy follows the Off Broadstreet trademark formula: Four sympathetic and likable, though unlikely, performers who have a passion for their work. Good wholesome fun, it is suitable for all audiences.
