Experience California’s gold mining history as you tour a working gold mine in operation for over a century. Established in 1896, the Sixteen to One Mine is a unique “pocket” mine where gold is found in highly concentrated deposits within the white quartz vein. The mine has produced over 1 million ounces of gold and is famous for its quartz and gold gemstone sought by jewelers.

All mine tours begin at Underground Gold Miners Museum where you will be told of the history of the Alleghany Mining District and the Sixteen to One Mine.

From the museum groups carpool or are shuttled to the zero level of the Sixteen to One Mine where the miner's daily routine on the surface is explained. The historic stamp mill and modern ball mill are explored.

Next stop is the portal at the 800 level on Kanaka Creek. Here we “brass in” and begin the trip underground. The world of the traditional hard rock gold miner and the geology of the mine are witnessed first hand.

Prices

Hoist Room Excursion
Travel into the mine as far as the 800 station (about 1,200 feet) and up to the hoist room. Total length of tour approximately three hours.

Ballroom Excursion
Travel first to the 800 station and hoist room then proceed a mile further to the "Ballroom" a large cavern in the white quartz vein. Total length of tour four hours.

Boy Scout Geology Merit Badge
Conducted by the mine Geologist, this full day provides an opportunity for scouts to earn their Geology Merit Badge.

Miner for a Day
Available weekdays only. A full day with the miners. Must be over 17 years old. $250 per person

Executive Tour
Individualized all day tour with the President of Original Sixteen to One Mine,Inc. $500.00

Lunch ~ Box lunches from Casey’s Place are available with all tours for an additional $10.00 (Lunch included with Working Day and Executive tours only.)

Mine tours require the ability to navigate steep terrain on foot.

All arrangments are subject to confirmation; if possible please allow 3 weeks lead time for group tour bookings. We reserve the right to modify or cancel any tour due to weather, unsafe conditions and other circumstances beyound our control. If we cancel, refund will be given. If you cancel, we must know 48 hours prior to tour time and a $10.00 processing fee will be charged. Participation in tours is contingent on visitor signing a liability waiver.

Visit the Museum
Located in an old livery stable that later served as the town's General Store for over 50 years, Underground Gold Miners Museum is open seasonally May through October ~ Call for days and hours 530-287-3330Admission is free.

Exhibits under development include geological information, mines of the Alleghany Mining District, history of mining and the town.

The museum gift shop features gold laced quartz specimens and jewelry from the Sixteen to One Mine as well as souvenirs, books and maps.

Videos available for viewing at the museum tell the history of hard rock mining and document recent history at the Sixteen to One Mine.

• MUSEUM MEMBERSHIP - Members recieve our newsletter, a 10% discount in our gift shop and an invitation to our annual meeting which features a surface tour of a mine in the Alleghany Mining District. Members nominate and vote for the Board of Directors.
