Original Sixteen to One Mine

Underground Gold Miners of California Museum

Open Seasonally - By appointment only and on days when mine tours are scheduled .

Located in a livery stable (ca. 1900) that later served as the town's General Store for over 50 years, Underground Gold Miners of California Museum is a 501 (c) (3) educational non-profit corporation incorporated in the State of California in 1995.

 

George Buelah and "May West" ca. 1950 Celebrating the Calif. Centennial - May West was the last working mule in the local Mines. Battery powered trammers replaced the mules and May was retired to roam the streets of Alleghany for over twenty years.

 

Exhibits include the history of the town of Alleghany, the mining district and the Sixteen to One Mine. Local minerals and rocks are on display.

 

Videos available for viewing tell the history of hardrock mining and document recent history at the Sixteen to One Mine.

 

The museum gift shop features gold-laced quartz specimens and jewelry from the Sixteen to One Mine as well as souvenirs, books, maps, geology specimens and t-shirts.

· Provide educational access to the workings of an active gold mining district in California
· Explain the unique geology of the Alleghany Mining District
· Preserve the history of the towns and mines of the Alleghany Mining District
· Highlight the evolution of equipment and technology in underground hardrock mining

 

UGMM fulfills this mission by:

 

· Providing educational tours of the Sixteen to One Mine
· Collecting artifacts, photos and stories related to the Alleghany Mining District
· Operating a museum with educational exhibits open to the public free of charge
· Public outreach via this web-site, presentations and printed media
