Underground Gold Miners Museum

Bringing the world of California's underground gold miners to light...

Photographs, memorabilia, artifacts and stories indiginous to the Alleghany area and especially related to mining are eagerly sought for our collection.  For instructions on scanning photos please look under "articles", or we will scan your photos for you and provide you with a copy (CD) in exchange for sharing.  Please email or call if you have items to donate. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.  Thank you!

George Buelah and "May West" ca. 1950 Celebrating the Calif. Centennial - May West was the last working mule in the local Mines. Battery powered trammers replaced the mules and May was retired to roam the streets of Alleghany for over twenty years.

Because of our remote location and lack of drive-through traffic the museum is open by appointment or during special events.  Event dates are posted here.

Bring your group or club to the museum for a unique local  history presentation including information on the local mines and geology.

For reservations please email: info@undergroundgold.com or phone 530-287-3330.

Museum exhibits include local geology, the history of the town of Alleghany, the Alleghany mining district and the Sixteen to One Mine.

The museum gift shop features gold-laced quartz specimens and jewelry from the Sixteen to One Mine as well as souvenirs, books, maps, geology specimens and t-shirts.

Historical photos and other information can be viewed by clicking on the "Articles" link at the top of this page.
